Health and religion

Irrespective of the religion that a person may be a follower of, it has been proven that religious attitude positively affects the state of the mental health of a human. The internal religiousness of an individual has been proven to correlate with his good mental health, as religion gives satisfaction in many aspects of life. Roughly speaking, religion fills the life with reasons and purposes that are unquestioningly followed and taken as something trustworthy. The synchronic character of religious creed and the corresponding behavior makes it possible to forecast both external and internal conflicts of a human. Faith also decreases existential fear.

A survey among representatives of different faiths (Catholics, Protestants, orthodox believers, Mormons) has shown that the level of religiousness directly correlates with the level of depression, emotional maturity and self appraisal. It means that in comparison with non-believers people who believe in God are in most cases less prone to aggression, depression, and all kinds of mental disorders. Individuals with strong religious faith generally have a high level of satisfaction with life, personal happiness, and low levels of anxiety as a result of some traumatizing events. Moreover, faith can also indirectly influence the physical health as well. People who believe in God are generally not inclined to alcohol abuse, drug addiction and so on, as this is all forbidden by religious dogmas.
